Nursing Foundation
Overview
The Nursing foundation is dedicated to laying a strong foundation for aspiring nursing professionals. The foundation course is designed to introduce students to the core principles of nursing practice, patient care, and the healthcare system. This early exposure ensures that students develop the confidence, compassion, and competence required to begin their journey in the nursing profession. Our foundation program emphasizes a balanced approach that combines classroom learning with hands-on clinical experience. Students are trained in fundamental nursing techniques, ethical practices, and the importance of patient-centered care.
The curriculum structured for Nursing foundation enables the students to gain Knowledge, Skill and desirable Attitudes in providing nursing care to patients with various illnesses. The subject is focused in I Year (I-Semester & II-Semester) of B.Sc. (N), I Year of P.B.B.Sc., (N).
The course also encourages the development of critical thinking, teamwork, and professional responsibility. Through continuous guidance and support from experienced faculty, students are prepared to progress into advanced areas of nursing education with a strong sense of dedication and purpose, making a meaningful impact in the healthcare sector.

Facilities
The Nursing Foundation Department is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities designed to provide students with a strong start to their nursing education. Our department includes a well-furnished Nursing Foundation Lab that replicates real hospital settings, allowing students to practice basic nursing procedures in a safe and supervised environment. The lab is equipped with modern hospital beds, mannequins, CPR models, dressing trolleys, IV stands, and other essential nursing equipment that help students gain hands-on experience and confidence in clinical skills.
In addition to the lab, the department offers smart classrooms with audio-visual aids, enabling interactive and effective learning. We also provide access to a nursing skill development center, demonstration areas, and a comprehensive library stocked with standard nursing textbooks, journals, and reference materials. Experienced faculty guide the students through theory and practical sessions to ensure a seamless integration of knowledge and skills. These facilities ensure that students are well prepared to transition into clinical practice and advanced areas of nursing.

- The Nursing Foundation is a core component of the Post Basic B.Sc. - This course aims to enable students to understand the philosophical, ethical, and legal aspects of nursing practice. It instills a sense of accountability, responsibility, and commitment to the profession by emphasizing the nurse’s role within the healthcare system. The course also promotes professional values, code of ethics, and standards of care expected in clinical settings.

WORKSHOP ON “PRANAYAMA IN STRESS REDUCTION” On 03.07.2025 at 9.00 am to 12.30 pm.
The Department of Nursing Foundation of Sri Manakula Vinayagar Nursing College, Puducherry has conducted the Work shop on “PRANAYAMA IN STRESS REDUCTION” on 3rd JULY 2025. The Seminar was organized under the guidance of DR. G. Muthamilselvi, Principal, DR. S. Narmatha, Vice-Principal and DR.G. Sathyavathy, HOD cum Associate Professor, SMVNC. The session was delivered by Mrs. RANI JAYA MARY, Diploma in Yoga & Naturopathy, at Lecture hall I, Ground Floor, SMVNC. The students of B.Sc. (N) I year (II Semester) have enthusiastically participated and learned about Pranayama in stress reduction.
GUEST LECTURE ON “BIO-MEDICAL WASTE MANAGEMENT-2025
The Guest lecture programme was organized on Bio-Medical Waste Management–2025 on 06th November 2025. The session was delivered by Mrs. Vimala M., Nursing Officer cum Infection Control Nurse and External Assessor of BPNI, RGGW & CH, Puducherry, at Lecture Hall I, SMVNC. B.Sc. (N) I Year (I Semester) students enthusiastically participated and gained knowledge on biomedical waste segregation, handling, and disposal as per BMW Rules 2016. A total of 98 students benefited, enhancing their awareness of infection control, environmental safety, and professional responsibility.
REPORT ON INDUCTION PROGRAMME-2025
The orientation programme for first-year B.Sc. Nursing students was conducted from 23.10.2025 to 30.10.2025, focusing on academic, professional, ethical, and personal development. Eminent faculty and resource persons delivered sessions on self-discipline, cultural competence, teamwork, ethics, professionalism, communication skills, technology in nursing, and stress management. Students were introduced to the nursing curriculum, college rules, hospital and community settings, healthcare systems, government schemes, and specialized nursing fields. Motivational talks, cybersecurity awareness, gender sensitization, mentor–mentee guidance, and Swachh Bharat sessions enriched the learning experience. Overall, the programme prepared students with confidence, discipline, and strong professional values for their nursing education and clinical practice.
REPORT ON WORLD FOOD DAY -2025
The World Food Day–2025 celebrated on 16th October 2025 with the theme “Hand in Hand for Better Foods and a Better Future”. The programme was conducted at the Third Floor, SMVMCH, B.Sc. (N) III Year (V-Semester) and IV Year students actively participated by organizing awareness activities, food stalls, posters, and interactive sessions. The event emphasized food security, healthy eating, prevention of food wastage, and sustainable food practices through demonstrations and discussions. A total of 18 students participated, and around 200 health care team members of SMVNC benefited from the programme.
REPORT ON “WORLD PATIENT SAFETY DAY - 2025”
Department of Nursing Foundation of Sri ManakulaVinayagar Nursing College, Puducherry has celebrated the “World Patient Safety Day- 2025” under the theme, “Safe Care for Every Newborn and Child” on 17th September, 2025 from 9.00 am to 10. 00 am. Under the guidance of DR. G. Muthamilselvi, Principal, DR. S. Narmatha, Vice-Principal, DR. G. Sathyavathy, HOD cum Associate Professor, SMVNC an “Essay Competition” was conducted at Lecture Hall -I, SMVNC. The students of B.Sc. (N) I year, II Semester and B.Sc. (N) II year, IV Semester have actively participated and won prizes for the competition. The essay were evaluated by Dr. Muthu Venkata Subramanian , Asso. Professor, SMVNC and Mrs. K. Deepalakshmi, Asst. Professor, SMVNC.
SEMINAR ON HOSPITAL ACQUIRED INFECTION
A Seminar on Hospital acquired infection” conducted on 07/08/2025 at 10.00 am to 11.00 am. Mrs. Sathiyakani Thangaraj, Deputy Nursing Superintendent, Nursing Service, JIPMER, Puducherry, delivered the session at Lecture Hall- I, SMVNC, Benefited B.Sc. (N) I Year (II Semester) 96 students and faculties. The speaker explained common causes and risk factors associated with hospital acquired infections. Various infection control measures and standard precautions were discussed. Overall, the seminar was informative and enriched the knowledge of students and faculty.
REPORT ON SIMULATION TRAINING PROGRAM
A “Simulation Training Program” was organized from 15th to 17th July 2025 at the Simulation Training Centre, SMVMCH. A total of 101 students from B.Sc., Nursing I Year and P.B.B.Sc., I Year participated and benefited from the program. Key procedures covered during the training included Catheter Insertion, Perineal Care, Oxygen Therapy, IV Infusion, and Tube Feeding. Training on oxygen therapy was conducted to improve respiratory care skills. Students also practiced IV infusion techniques. Tube feeding procedures were demonstrated and practiced in detail. Overall, the program was highly beneficial and contributed to improved confidence and clinical readiness among students.
REPORT ON “GUEST LECTURE ON PREVENTION OF NEEDLE STICK INJURIES - 2025”
A Guest Lecture on “Prevention of Needle Stick Injuries” was conducted on 4th July 2025 at Lecture Hall I, SMVNC. Mrs. Mohana M., Deputy Nursing Superintendent, SMVMCH, served as the resource person. Benefited B.Sc. Nursing I-Year (II Semester) 98 students. The session highlighted the causes and risk factors of needle stick injuries. Preventive measures and safe handling of sharps were clearly explained. Standard precautions and post-exposure protocols were discussed in detail. The importance of reporting and timely management of injuries was emphasized.

(N) III Year and P.B.B.Sc. I Year students actively participated in the event. Around 80 OPD patients and staff nurses benefited from the program.

B.Sc. Nursing I Year (I-Semester) students actively participated in creating awareness about oral health among patients, staff nurses, and healthcare workers. Around 80 beneficiaries received education on proper oral hygiene, preventive dental practices, and the importance of regular dental check-ups. Oral health materials such as toothbrushes and toothpaste were distributed, encouraging healthy oral habits and promoting the role of nurses in holistic healthcare.

School Health Programme on First Aid Management (Road Traffic Accident) 12.07.2024
A School Health Programme was conducted on “First Aid Management (Road Traffic Accident)” on 12th July 2024. B.Sc. Nursing I-Year (II Semester) students performed a Role play at Kalaignar Karunanidhi Government Higher Secondary School, Madagadipet. The session benefited 103 students, 30 teachers, and 25 staff members.

Celebrated “International Men’s Health Week – 2024” from 12th to 14th June, 2024 under the theme “Stronger Together.” A Mass Health Education Campaign was conducted at SMVMCH OPDs, focusing on men’s health issues and prevention. B.Sc. Nursing I-Year (II Semester) students actively participated, and benefited over 150 individuals daily.
