Child Health Nursing

OVERVIEW

Department of Child Health Nursing is focussed on the care of neonates, children and adolescence in both the programmes of undergraduate and postgraduate Nursing students based on the Indian nursing council curriculum. The department actively participates in training the students to render service for the sick neonates, children and do research in the field of child health nursing. The student learning in this specialty is to help them to appreciate the child as a holistic individual and to develop skill to function as Neonatal and Paediatric nurses.

The department was upgraded with recent edition of books related to New born and Child Health. The Child Health nursing laboratories have an array of Models, Simulators, Charts and play materials. This lab provides solid foundation and first-hand experience in handling Neonates and Children with help of simulators, manikins and also other new born and child related procedures. Based on the vision and mission of the institution students are trained to give evidence-based Nursing care so as to reach the unreached.

The Mission of department of Child Health Nursing is to develop in-depth knowledge, skill and right attitude to function as neonatal and paediatric nurse to provide holistic nursing care to the sick and critically ill children at any given setting.

We, the faculty of nursing believes that the faculty have the answerabilities to be the mentor and generate educational environment that allows the student to achieve self -directed learning and foster an attitude of lifelong learning. We, the faculty of nursing believes that the students will prepare the plan and provide quality care based on the health need of children with other health professionals.

Research

Research in nursing was promoted since 2013, when the postgraduate programme established in college of nursing, initially worked under the institutional ethical committee. Till now 13 PG dissertation was successfully guided by institutional ethical committee in the department of Child Health Nursing.

2025

 A Role play on NATIONAL DEWORMING DAY” at Bharatha Devi high school, Madagadipet Puducherry on 10/02/2025. Totally 48 School students and 14 B.Sc., (N) III year students got benefited from this programme.

A seminar on “Facility Based Newborn Care (FBNC) and Essential Newborn Care (ENBC)” was conducted on 07.03.2025 at the Auditorium, SMVMCH. Resource speakers from various colleges delivered sessions on the importance of newborn care practices, early identification of neonatal complications, and appropriate management. A total of 224 students from various colleges such as AGP, ECNC, MCON, and SMVNC participated in and benefited from this program.

 A Guest lecture on “WORLD AUTISM AWARENESS DAY” at SMVNC, B.Sc. Nursing-V Semester class, II Floor on 02\04\2024. The guest speaker  DR. VELPRASANTH VENKATAESAN, Assisstant Professsor, Dept. of psychiatric SMVMCH presented about “EARLY SIGN’S AND IT’S MANAGEMENT OF AUTISM”. Total 95 B.Sc Nursing V semester students got benefited

 A Guest lecture on “WORLD AUTISM AWARENESS DAY” at SMVNC, B.Sc. Nursing-V Semester class, II Floor on 02\04\2024. The guest speaker  DR. VELPRASANTH VENKATAESAN, Assisstant Professsor, Dept. of psychiatric SMVMCH presented about “EARLY SIGN’S AND IT’S MANAGEMENT OF AUTISM”. Total 95 B.Sc Nursing V semester students got benefited

A Poster Competition on “World Immunization Week – 2025” was conducted on 24.04.2025 at SMVMCH. The competition aimed to create awareness about the importance of immunization in preventing vaccine-preventable diseases. A total of 95 B.Sc. Nursing students participated in and benefited from this program.

A Food Exhibition for “National Weaning Week – 2025” was conducted on 13.05.2025 at SMVMCH. The program focused on creating awareness about appropriate weaning practices and nutritious complementary feeding for infants. The beneficiaries of this program included 50 parents and 20 B.Sc. Nursing III Year V Semester students.

A Panel Discussion on “World Day Against Child Labour” on the topic “Education as a Tool to Eradicate Child Labour” was conducted on 12.07.2025 at the B.Sc. Nursing VI Semester Lecture Hall, SMVNC. The moderator for the panel discussion was Mrs. Davamani T., M.Sc., M.Ed., M.Phil. (Bio-Tech), ECCE, GMS, Karaikal. The session emphasized the importance of education in preventing and eliminating child labour   and promoting child welfare. A total of 95 B.Sc. Nursing VI Semester students participated in and benefited from this program.

A seminar on “World ORS Week – 2025” was conducted at SMVNC, B.Sc. Nursing III Year (VI Semester) Lecture Hall on 29/07/2025. The guest speaker for this program was Dr. Keerthana, MBBS, MD (Pediatrics), Senior Resident, Department of Pediatrics, SMVMCH. She delivered an informative session on “Oral Rehydration Therapy”, explaining the importance of ORS in the prevention and management of dehydration, especially among children with diarrhea. A total of 95 B.Sc. Nursing students benefited from this program.

An awareness program on “World Breastfeeding Week” (1st–7th August) was conducted at the SMVNC Lecture Hall and Thirubhuvani PHC. The program aimed to create awareness among mothers and students about the importance and benefits of breastfeeding for infant health and development..A total of 95 students and 85 mothers benefited from this awareness program

A Poster Competition on “National Child Health Day – 2025” was conducted at SMVNC on 29/10/2025. B.Sc. Nursing VI Semester students presented posters based on the theme Healthy Beginnings, Hopeful Futures.” A total of 25 students benefited from this program.

A guest lecture on “World Autism Awareness Day” was conducted at SMVNC for B.Sc. Nursing III Year students in the Lecture Hall on 02/04/2024. The guest speaker for the program was Dr. Ezhil Nilavan T., Senior Resident, Department of Paediatrics, SMVMCH. He delivered an informative session on the topic “Management and Prevention of Autism in Children.” A total of 94 students benefited from this program.

A Puppet Show on “World Immunization Week” was conducted on 25/04/2024 at Murungapakkam PHC. The program aimed to create awareness among mothers about the importance of immunization for children. A total of 50 mothers and 15 B.Sc. Nursing students  was benefited from this program.

A Food Exhibition on “National Weaning Week” was conducted on 27/05/2024 at SMVMCH. A total of 60 parents/public and 25 B.Sc. Nursing III year students benefited from this program.

A role play on “World Day Against Child Labour” was conducted on 26/06/2024 at Thirubhuvanai Palaiyam.. A total of 50 parents/public and 10 B.Sc. Nursing students benefited from this program.

        A guest lecture on “World ORS Week – 2024” was organized at SMVNC, B.Sc. Nursing III Year Lecture Hall on 25.07.2024. The guest speaker for the program was Dr. S. Giridharan, Assistant Professor, Department of Pediatrics, SMVMCH presented about “ORAL REHYDRATION THERAPY”. Totally 94 B.Sc Nursing Students got benefited from this program.

Awareness program on WORLD BREAST FEEDING WEEK” Held on August (1to8) at SMVNC/SMVMCH auditorim and Murugapakkam PHC. Totally 95 students and 90 mothers got benefited from this awareness program.

A Poster Competition on “National Neonatal Nurses Week – 2024” was conducted on 20th September 2024 at SMVMCH. The program aimed to create awareness and enhance knowledge among nurses regarding neonatal care and nursing practices. A total of 25 staff nurses participated and benefited from this program.

A   role play on “National Child Health Day” was conducted on 25.10.2024 at Government Higher Secondary School, Thirubhuvanai Palayam. A total of 80 school students and 14 B.Sc. Nursing III year students participated in and benefited from his program

Awareness program on NATIONAL NEWBORN WEEK” at SMVMCH  Puducherry on 15th NOV-2024. Totally 80 school students and 14 B.Sc Nursing students are benefitted from this program.

An Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav (AKAM) programme on the topic “Empowerment of Women and Children ’’was organized on 15/02/2023 at SMVMCH. Students performed a role play during the programme. A total of 30 B.Sc Nursing III Year students and 80 public got benefited            

A guest lecture on “World Autism Awareness Day” was held on 03/04/2023 at SMVNC, B.Sc. Nursing III Year Lecture Hall. The guest speaker for this program was Dr. Arulkumaran, Head of the Department of Paediatrics, SMVMCH. A total of 95 B.Sc. Nursing III year students attended the program and benefited from the session.

 An Awareness Program on “World Breastfeeding Week – 2023” was conducted from August 1 to 8, 2023 at SMVMCH and Murugapakkam PHC. A total of 95 B.Sc. Nursing students participated in the program  and  150 mothers benefited from this awareness program.

A National Level Seminar on “Research Methodology” was held on 18/08/2025 at the College Auditorium. Resource speakers from the National level delivered sessions on various aspects of research methodology. A total of 450 students and 350 staff nurses/faculty members attended and benefited from the seminar.
