OVERVIEW
Medical Surgical Nursing is the mainstay of the Nursing Degree Programmes. The Department of Medical Surgical Nursing is a broad specialty of Nursing strives to transmit in depth knowledge related to adult health including geriatrics. The department strives to impart clinical skills in students to provide comprehensive care related to Adult Health Nursing. The success of department depends on its team work and excellent communication. The Faculty members are highly qualified and dedicated to impart excellent knowledge to the students by using various teaching methodologies which enable the students to function as a Nurse, Educator, Manager and Researcher in the field of Medical Surgical Nursing.
The curriculum structured for Medical Surgical Nursing enables the students to gain Knowledge, Skill and desirable Attitudes in providing nursing care to adult patients with various illnesses. The subject is focused in II & III years of B.Sc. (N), I year of P.B.B.Sc. (N) & I & II years of M.Sc. (N).
The department provides student centered teaching and learning by adopting innovative teaching learning methods like Small group learning, Self learning module, Context based learning, Team based learning, personalized learning, Programmed instruction and Simulation method. We are organizing international/ national/ state conference, workshop, and seminars with TNNMC credit hours.

Facilities
Medical Surgical Nursing Lab is available for both UG and PG students. The lab is well equipped with adequate number of International Mannequins Simulators that help for class room teaching with skill learning where the students get hands on experience for various procedures which are available in INC Curriculum
Simulation corner and self-learning desk is designed to give students training for basic nursing procedure to advanced procedures like Venipuncture, Oxygen Administration, Tracheostomy Care, Ostomy care, Suturing, CPR, and Endotracheal Intubation. Students are given hands on training in the lab before they practice in the actual clinical area
Faculty Members of MSN department imparts in-depth knowledge to the students by innovative teaching strategies like seminars, demonstration, simulations, clinical presentations, conferences, workshops, projects, and discussions etc which are of immense benefit to students. The students are taught to independently handle sophisticated equipments such as ECG machines, ventilators, defibrillators and other apparatus used in critical care units. Medical Surgical Nursing is practice in several settings across the Health Care industry, including Hospitals, Outpatient settings, in Homes, via telemedicine and other non-traditional settings. The specialty of medical Surgical Nursing is seen in almost every care environment

On 8th July, 2025, Guest Lecture on “Maintenance of CVP Line” was carried out by Dr. Vijayakumar, Asst. Prof, Dept. of Anesthesia, AVMCH at Lecture hall, SMVNC. Around 100 students benefitted through this lecture.
Panel discussion on “Hepatitis – Know It, Confront It”
On 17th April, 2025 Panel discussion on “Hepatitis – Know It, Confront It” was moderated by Mrs. N. Rajalakshmi, Deputy Nursing Superintendent, SMVMCH at Lecture Hall, SMVNC. Around 100 nursing students got benefitted.
Awareness Programme on Unite to End Tuberculosis
On 24th March, 2025, Best TB Awareness Creator Contest on “Unite to End Tuberculosis” was conducted at Pulmo OPD, SMVMCH. Winners of the contest Ms. Yazhini. R, Ms. Keerthana. S, Ms. Malathi. P were appreciated and awarded. Around 200 public people have got benefited through this programme.

On 21st March 2025, Rangoli Competition on “Gender Equity” was conducted at our college campus. Around 15 students benefitted through this activity.

4th National Workshop on Basic Cardiac Life Support – Hands on Training
On 13th February, 2025, the 4th National Workshop on “Basic Cardiac Life Support – Hands on Training” was organized at College Auditorium. BCLS training was given by Dr. S. Kanagasabapathy, Trainer, Tamil Nadu Apex Training Centre for Healthcare, Chennai. Around 100 nursing students have got benefited from this training.
“Simulation Training Program” on ET Intubation & CVP Monitoring
On 28, 29, 30th January 2025, Simulation training on “Endotracheal intubation, Central Venous Pressure monitoring” was conducted at Simulation lab. Around 100 nursing students got benefitted through this programme.

World COPD day celebration – Awareness Programme on Know Your Lung Function
On 3rd June 2024, “World Thyroid Day 2024” was celebrated under the theme, “Nurturing thyroid health: Knowledge, detection, wellness” at SMVNC. E-poster competition was organized and the winners were awarded with prizes.
Awareness Programme on World Diabetes day
In commemoration of World Diabetes Day 2024, Health stall regarding Diabetic diet, diabetic foot care, and diabetic screening and Awareness rally, was conducted from 11th – 13th November 2024 at SMVMCH. Around 100 nursing students, 300 public people got benefitted through this programme.
Guest lecture on “Integrating technology in emergency nursing practice”
On 29th August 2024, a Guest lecture on “Integrating Technology into Emergency Nursing Practice” was carried out by DR. P. Gophi, Registered Nurse Band 5, Emergency Department, Portsmouth Hospital University NHS Trust at Lecture hall, SMVNC. Around 100 nursing students got benefitted through this lecture.
2nd State level seminar on “Fundamentals of Prescribing Module”
On 3rd September 2024, the 2nd State level seminar on “Fundamentals of Prescribing module” was organized at College auditorium. 8 expert resource speakers delivered insightful sessions on key aspects of prescribing in Pharmacology. 100 SMVNC students and 100 Mailam Nursing College students gained knowledge through the sessions.

On 29th August 2024, a Guest lecture on ECG Interpretation was carried out by Dr. Ashidha. T. S, Professor, Dept. of Cardiology, SMVMCH at Lecture hall, SMVNC. Around 100 nursing students got benefitted through this lecture.
National Eye Donation Fortnight Week Celebration
From 25th August to 8th September 2024, the National Eye donation Fortnight Week celebration was organized under the theme, “I can see clearly now”. Eye donation registration stall, awareness rally, Best Eye donation Awareness creator contest was carried out at our College campus. Around 100 nursing students, 500 public got benefitted through this programme.
Hands on Training - Simulation
On 3rd July 2024, “Hands on training – Simulation” (Management of a patient with Hypovolemic shock) was organized at Seminar Hall, SMVNC. DR. Judie Arulappan, Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator, Sultan Qaboos University supervised and provided feedback. Around 400 nursing students received training on Simulation.
Hands on Skill Training – Basic Life Support
From 1st – 2nd July 2024, “Hands on Training – Basic Cardiac Life Support” was organized at Seminar Hall, SMVNC. The 2022 – 2026 batch students received practical training on BCLS conducted by Ms. Rehana Ansari, BLS Regional Trainer (South), Delta Healthcare Pvt. Ltd. Around 100 students got trained through this session.

World Hypertension day “Measure Your Blood Pressure Accurately, control it, live longer” – Mass Health education
On 20th May 2024, “World Hypertension Day 2024” was celebrated under the theme, “Measure Your Blood Pressure Accurately, Control It, Live longer” at SMVNC Campus. A Mass Health Education activity was carried out benefitting 100 nursing students.
Faculty Development Programme on “Leveraging AI tools in Higher Education”
On 10th & 11th May 2024, Faculty Development Programme on “Leveraging AI tools in Higher Education” was organized at Seminar Hall, SMVNC. DR. Vimal Jerald, Asst. Prof, St. Joseph’s College, Tiruchirapalli, facilitated the sessions benefitting around 30 SMVNC faculties & 10 MNC faculties.
Awareness programme on Organ Donation
On 6th May 2024, an Awareness Programme on Organ Donation was organized at SMVMCH. Health stall, Puppet show, and role play on importance of organ donation were carried out benefitting 300 public.
World Hepatitis Day – 2024 – Mass Vaccination Camp
On 19th April 2024, “World Hepatitis Day 2024” was celebrated under the theme, “It’s time for action” at SMVMCH. Our students vaccinated around 100 B. Sc. (N) I year students and 20 sanitary workers.
World Health Day Awareness programme on My Health My Right
On 7th April 2024, “World Health Day 2024” was celebrated under the theme, “My Health, My Right” at SMVNC. Our students created awareness through health awareness posters benefitting around 100 public.
Quiz competition on “World Tuberculosis Day”
On 25th March 2024, in commemoration of “World Tuberculosis Day” a Quiz competition was conducted at Lecture Hall, SMVNC”. Around 105 nursing students gained awareness through this programme.
Simulation Training Programme on Peri-Operative Skill Training
From 21st – 23rd March 2024, Simulation training programme on “Peri-operative Skill training” was conducted at Simulation lab. Around 97 nursing students got benefitted through this training.
World Kidney Day Awareness Programme on “Kidney Health for all advancing equitable access to care and optimal medication practice”
On 9th March 2024, Health awareness activity was carried out under the theme “Kidney Health for all advancing equitable access to care and optimal medication practice” at Nephrology OPD, Dialysis unit, SMVMCH. Around 250 public gained awareness through health education.
Rangoli competition on “Changing mindsets: Let’s make ear and hearing care reality for all”
On 4th March 2024, in commemoration of “World Hearing Day”, our students participated in the Rangoli competition under the theme “Changing mindsets: Let’s make ear and hearing care reality for all” at SMVMCH and the winners were awarded with prizes.
World Cancer Day Guest lecture “Eliminating Provoking Factors for Lung Cancer”
On 20th February 2024, in commemoration of “World Cancer Day” a Guest lecture on the topic “Eliminating provoking factors for Lung Cancer” was carried out by Dr. S. Yuvarajan, HOD, Dept. of Respiratory medicine, SMVMCH at SMVMCH Basement auditorium. Around 105 nursing students gained awareness through this programme.
World Leprosy Day – Awareness programme on Beat Leprosy
On 30th January 2024, “World Leprosy Day – 2024” was celebrated under the theme “Beat Leprosy”. A Health awareness stall regarding prevention of Leprosy was organized at SMVMCH. Around 105 nursing students, 300 public gained awareness through this programme.

On 4, 5, 8th January 2024, Simulation training programme on “Endotracheal intubation, Central Venous Pressure monitoring” was conducted at Simulation lab. Around 100 nursing students got benefitted through this programme.

World Diabetes Day
In commemoration of World Diabetes Day, Health stall regarding Diabetic diet, diabetic foot care, and diabetic screening and Awareness rally, Cooking without fire competition was conducted from 14th – 18th November 2023 at SMVMCH. Around 100 nursing students participated, 300 public people got benefitted through this programme.

World COPD Day
On 15th November 2023, in commemoration of World COPD Day, a Guest lecture on “Non Pharmacological management of COPD” was carried out by Dr. S. Yuvarajan, HOD, Dept. of Respiratory medicine, SMVMCH at college auditorium. 100 nursing students participated and got benefitted through this programme.
World Heart Day
On 5th October 2023, in commemoration of “World Heart Day” a Quiz competition was conducted at Seminar Hall, SMVNC. Around 105 nursing students gained awareness through this programme.
Eye Donation Programme 2023
From 25th August to 8th September 2023, the National Eye donation Fortnight Week celebration was organized under the theme, “Make Eye donation, a family tradition”. Eye donation registration stall, awareness rally, Guest lecture on Importance of Eye donation by Dr. A. Sripal, Assistant Professor, Dept. of Ophthalmology, Slogan & Essay competition, and Mime show was carried out at our College campus and Pavendar Bharathidasan Hr. Sec. School, PS palayam. Around 100 nursing students participated, and 130 school students, 10 school teachers, 300 public got benefitted through this programme.
Guest Lecture on Mechanical Ventilator and care of patient on mechanical ventilator
On 11th May 2023, a Guest lecture on Care of patient on Mechanical ventilator was carried out by Dr. R. Srinivasan, MD, DNB, PDCC (Critical care), Associate. Prof, Dept. of Anesthesiology, SMVMCH at SMVMCH Basement auditorium. Around 170 nursing students participated and got benefitted through this lecture.
AKAM- Rally on Global Warming & Sustainable Development for concept of LiFE-
On 31st March 2023, under the theme Sustainable development under the concept of life, an awareness rally on Global warming, Tree plantation, Orientation programme on Health Schemes for Teachers, Role play on Hand hygiene, & Guest lecture on Importance of Quality education was organized at Kalaignar Karunanithi Govt. Higher Secondary School, Madagadipet, Puducherry. Around 100 nursing students participated and benefitted 150 school students, 10 school teachers, 300 public people
