Obstetrics & Gynaecological Nursing
Overview
The Department of OBG Nursing is one of the Clinical Nursing Specialty departments of Sri Manakula Vinayagar Nursing college, Puducherry. It provides courses in obstetrical and Gynecological Nursing with theoretical and practical elements to Undergraduate, Postgraduate Nursing students within the framework of the curriculum plan in the college of nursing and expands academic excellence through collaborative research by meeting the National and International standards.
The Department aims towards excellence in clinical practice and strives to provide the students with various aspect of midwifery to become competent and caring midwives. We ensure effective and efficient services to our student community & enable them to function as educators, managers and researchers in the field of OBG Nursing. This Department priorly focuses on nursing care for women from puberty to menopause. It renders incredible opportunity for student nurses to provide services to women during pregnancy, labor and childbirth, as well as women with health issues.

- The aim of the OBG department is to enrich the lives of women and children by offering the most effective nursing education to professionals towards optimizing the health of women and children in the ever-changing health care environment.
- To provide the best exclusive education, practice, and research related to OBG Nursing.
- To deliver high-quality evidence-based nursing interventions which are associated with critical thinking and effective communication are vital for designing the nursing process to render patient-focused service to the mother and child.

Objective
At the end of the course students will
- Describe the physiology of pregnancy, labour and puerperium.
- Manage normal pregnancy, labour and puerperium
- Explain the physiology of lactation and advice on management of breast feeding.
- Be skilled in providing pre and post operative nursing care in obstetric conditions.
- Identify and manage high risk pregnancy including appropriate referrals.
- Propagate the concept and motivate acceptance of family planning methods.
- Teach, guide and supervise auxiliary midwifery personnel

(b) Community Clinical Facilities
Sri Manakula Vinayagar Nursing College students are given opportunity to participate in Immunization programmes, School health programmes, MCH programmes, Home visit, Street play, puppet show, Role play, projects, health talk, mass health programmes, Nutritional assessment and cooking demonstration are carried out in areas attached to both rural and urban health centres.
Lab Facilities
It is set up with the view to enable the students to provide comprehensive care to Mothers, Neonates and Children. The infrastructure of the lab includes delivery cot, adult cots, new-born cradles, with different articles and instruments used in Obstetrics & Gynaecological Nursing
The Departmental Lab is well equipped with Birthing Simulators, Obstetric manikins, Pelvis, Fetal Skull, Various Obstetrical Instruments, different kinds of Models etc. These all help the students to acquire Knowledge & skills in patient care that are to be practiced in clinical settings.
Simulation Lab
Students are given an opportunity at all level of training to participate in the simulation lab and students are better equipped to perform complex procedures and to improve healthcare quality and safety.
To excel in advancing the knowledge and skills of tomorrow nurses, we utilize a variety of simulation modalities to assess core competencies, teach proper techniques and achieve and maintain proficiency in technical skills.

Seminar on Legal and Ethical Issues in the Management of Abortion held on 07th April 2025, Dr. Menaka Karmegam, Medical Officer – PHC, Murungapakkam. Totally 100 students were benefited from this programme.
Symposium on Family Planning & Contraception held on 12th April 2025. Dr. Pamagal Kavithai Senior Medical Officer, PHC, Villianur was the Chairperson of the symposium. Totally 100 students participated had gained knowledge.

Awareness Program on Maternal Health held on 23rd July 2025 at PHC Thirubuvanai. Nearly 30 antenatal mother was benefited.
RRC and OBG Organized a Seminar on Sustainable Menstrual Solutions -Breaking Myths and Addressing Stigma held on 24th July 2025.Dr.Irudayasamy Managing Trustee Institute of Research & Development for Rural Poor- Trustwas the Resource Speaker.Totally 300 Students were Benefited.
Organized Training Program on SBA Module – Strengthening Midwifery Skills in Nursing held on19th August 2025. Totally 215 students was participated
Simulation Training Programme on Obstetrical Procedure held on 29.08.2025 & 30.08.2025. Totally 76 students were benefited by this simulation.
Conducted the Awareness Program on Cervical Cancer held on 17.09.2025 at PHC Thirubhuvanai. Nearly 40 Women was benefited.

Seminar on Assessment of Reproductive Health Problems and its Preventive Measures among Adolescent Girls held on 1st& 2nd July 2024. The session handed by Dr.Saranya Asst.Prof, SMVMCH. Totally 182 students from Sri Manakula Vinayagar School of Allied Health Sciences & SMVNC were benefited from this Seminar.
Seminar on HIV in Pregnancy held on 22 March 2024. The Sessions handed by Dr. Aswathi Dept. of Community Medicine, SMVMCH on Overview of HIV in Pregnancy, DR. Nanthini Dept. of OBG, MTPG & RIHS on Epidemiological Approach on HIV during Pregnancy, DR. Jayasankari PIMS on Common Management of HIV during Pregnancy, Mrs. S. Manimegalai Dept. of Community Health Nursing, SMVNC on Roles & Responsibilities of Nurses in HIV during Pregnancy. Totally 230 students from Mailam Nursing College & SMVNC were benefited.
Safe Motherhood Day –Theme: Maternal and Infant Well Being held on 17th April 2024 at PHC, Nettapakkam. Totally 100 students and 50 mothers were benefited by this programme.
Seminar on Infertility Management and Current Guidelines held on 09.05.2024. The session handed by DR. Kavitha Principal, School of Nursing, MTPG & RIHS, Puducherry. Totally 100 students were benefited by this Programme.
Awareness Programme on HPV Vaccination among adolescent girls held on 27th May 2024. The session was delivered by Dr.Hemavathy MS (OG), Senior Resident, SMVMCH. Totally 100 students were participated had gained knowledge.
Seminar on Nursing Responsibility in Invasive and Non-Invasive Procedure in OBG held on 21.06.2024. The session handed over by Dr. Kavitha Senior Resident, Dept. of OBG, SMVMCH. Totally 100 students were benefited.
Hands on Training – Simulation in Nursing Education” on 03rd July 2024. Pre- briefing & debriefing process was well explained by Dr. Judie Arulappan Director (NLSU) College of Nursing, Muscat. Totally 300 students & faculties from SMVNC were benefitted by this Simulation training.

Conducted “awareness programme on breast cancer held on 10th December 2024 at PHC, Thirubhuvanai. Totally 80 women were benefited through this programme.
Simulation Training Programme on obstetrical procedure held on 12.12.2024 &13.12.2024. Totally 100 students were benefited by this simulation.

Seminar on Current Trends in Family Welfare Programme held on 16.03.2023. Dr. Priyadharshini, Associate Professor, SMVMCH as chief guest. Totally 100 students were benefited by this Programme.
Conducted a Seminar on Effects of Maternal Medication on Foetus and Neonate held on 28.03.2023 by guest speaker Dr. Inbarasi, Assistant Professor, SMVMCH. Totally 100 students were benefited by this Programme.
Conducted a safe motherhood day on the theme of REMAIN AT HOME ADIM CORONA VIRUS, PROTECT MOTHER AND INFANT held on 05.04.2023. Totally 150 antenatal mothers were benefited by this programme.
Seminar on Hormonal Replacement therapy held on 04.05.2023. Totally 100 students were benefited by this Programme
Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecological Nursing conducted a State level conference on “Quality Enhancement and sustenance in evaluation Skill of Nurse Educators” held on 13.05.2023. Totally 350 delegates were benefited by this programme.

Course Description:
This course is designed for students to appreciate the concepts and principles of midwifery and obstetrical nursing. It helps them to acquire knowledge and skills in rendering nursing care to normal and high risk pregnant woman during antenatal, natal and post-natal periods in hospitals and community settings. It also helps to develop skills in managing normal and high risk neonates and participate in family welfare programme.

Description:
This course is designed for students to develop knowledge and competencies on the concepts and principles of midwifery. It helps them to acquire knowledge and skills in rendering respectful maternity care to woman during antenatal, intra natal and postnatal periods in hospitals and community settings. It further helps to develop skills in managing normal neonates and participate in family welfare programs.
Competencies: On completion of the program, the students will be able to

Description: This course is designed for students to develop knowledge and competencies on the concepts and principles of obstetrics and gynecology nursing. It helps them to acquire knowledge and skills in rendering respectful maternity care to high risk woman during antenatal, natal and postnatal periods in hospitals and community settings and help to develop skills in initial management and referral of high risk neonates. It would also help students to gain knowledge, attitude and skills in caring for women with gynecological disorders.
Competencies: On completion of the course, the students will be able to:
- Describe the assessment, initial management, referral and respectful maternity care of women with high risk pregnancy.
- Demonstrate competency in identifying deviation from normal pregnancy.

Course Description
This course is designed to widen the student’s knowledge of obstetrics during pregnancy, labour and puerperium. It also helps to acquire knowledge and develop skill in rendering optimum nursing care to a child bearing mother in a hospital or community and help in the management of common gynecological problems.
Practical

A. Be posted in antenatal clinic, MCH Clinic, antenatal ward, labour room, postnatal ward, maternity OT, MTP room.
B Visit welfare agencies for women and write observation report.
C. Follow nursing process in providing care to 3-6 patients.
D. Write at least two nursing care studies and do a presentation
E. Give at least one planned health teaching to a group of mothers.
2. Practice following nursing procedures.
a. Antenatal and post-natal examination, per vaginal exam.
b. Conduct normal delivery, stitching of episiotomy, (For male candidates minimum conduct of 5 deliveries)
c. Motivate family for Planned Parenthood.
d. Motivation of family for adopting family planning methods.
e. Assist in various diagnostic and therapeutic procedures including IUD insertion and removal

Course Description
This course is designed to assist students in developing expertise and in-depth understanding in the field of Obstetric and Gynecological Nursing. It will help students to appreciate the client as a holistic individual and develop skill to function as an independent midwifery practitioner. It will further enable the student to function as educator, manager, and researcher in the field of Obstetric and Gynecological nursing.
Objectives
At the end of the course the students will be able to:
- Appreciate the trends in the field of midwifery, obstetrics and gynecology as a specialty.
- Describe the population dynamics and indicators of material and child health.
- Describe the concepts of biophysical, psychological and spiritual aspects of normal pregnancy, labor and puerperium.
- Provide comprehensive nursing care to woman during reproductive period.
- Integrate the concepts of family centered nursing care and nursing process approach in obstetric and gynecological nursing.
- Identify and analyze the deviations from normal birth process and refer appropriately.
- Describe the pharmacological agents, their effects during pregnancy, child birth, puerperium, lactation and the role of nurse.

Course Description
This course is designed to assist the student in developing expertise and in-depth understanding in the field of Obstetric and gynecological Nursing. It will help the student to develop advanced nursing skills for nursing interventions in various obstetrical and gynecological conditions. It will further enable the students to function as midwifery nurse practitioner/specialist, educator, manager and researcher in the field of obstetric and gynecological nursing.
Objectives
At the end of the course, the student will be able to:
- Describe the epidemiology, etiology, pathophysiology and diagnostic assessment of women with obstetric and gynecological conditions
- Perform physical, psychosocial, cultural & spiritual assessment
- Demonstrate competence in caring for women with obstetrical and gynecological conditions
- Demonstrate competence in caring for high risk newborn.
- Identify and Manage obstetric and neonatal emergencies as per protocol.
- Practice infection control measures
- Utilize recent technology and various diagnostic, therapeutic modalities in the management of obstetrical, gynecological and neonatal care.
- Demonstrate skill in handling various equipment/gadgets used for obstetrical, gynecological and neonatal care
- Teach and supervise nurses and allied health workers.
- Design a layout of specialty units of obstetrics and gynecology
